With direct flights from most European cities (including Vienna, from where we came after wrapping up our time in Austria), Billund is the fun-filled home of Legoland, Lego House, and other adventure parks. Although the company town of Billund itself is small and compact, you could easily spend a week here, as there’s so much to do for families and also for enjoying the nature and bike paths around town (rarely would you think to describe a place packed with theme parks as relaxed, but it felt that way!). We were there at the end of July and generally caught good weather, with occasional rain; not bad for notoriously temperamental Denmark.
We were thrilled to meet up with our good friends, the Wilsons, on their family trip. We rented an ample Airbnb that felt like more of a compound, with plenty of space and rooms for everyone, stocked kitchen for dinners al fresco, and best of all, a treehouse, trampoline, and toys for the kids to play with while the adults chilled after long days at the theme parks.
β’ Legoland – the original Legoland is a massive amusement park with themed areas of rides, games, and impressive Lego scenes based on mostly European sites and cities. Given the size and scope of activities and rides to experience, you can easily spend two days here, which is why, if you have the time, the multi-day pass (which includes both Legoland and Lego House entrances for the family) makes sense. We were enthralled with the Lego scene-scapes, especially ones we have visited IRL. Jacobβs favorite area was the Ferrari Build & Race where you can build, test, and race your own racecar; he spent hours there on both days.
β’ Lego House – an indoor space to explore all things Lego, from seeing what others have created to building your own at play areas on three floors. You can spend a full day at Lego House (at least); locals have an annual pass and drop their kids off for after-school and weekend play.
β’ Wow Adventure Park – an outdoor amusement park with giant slides, zip lines, swings, bouncy nets among the trees, etc. A favorite for our family!
β’ Lalandia Water Park – outdoor and indoor play features, and sauna and jacuzzis for the parents. Lalandia is a nice back-up for the inevitable rainy day while in Billund.
An additional tip: do as the Danes do and pack a picnic – all of Billund’s amusement and adventure parks allow you to bring in your own food and beverages (youβll see everyone else carting around wagons filled with provisions) and youβll save some money too.
For both kids and AFOLs (Adult Fans Of Lego), Billund is an awesome summer destination!
